Spay / Neuter Program

The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA provides low-income pet owners an opportunity to have their animals spayed or neutered at a reduced cost. Subsidies are granted to those who meet the low income criteria.

Why should I spay or neuter my pet?

Animal overpopulation is a serious problem in Hamilton, like many other cities around the world. Spaying or neutering your pet is an important and responsible means of helping to control the pet population. Spaying and neutering also decreases the risk of certain cancers, which helps keep your animal companion happy and healthy. Cats that are spayed or neutered have more calm and balanced personalities. If you have problems with a cat that sprays, neutering can help.

Is my companion animal eligible for the program?

Your pet MUST:

  • be between four months and five years of age
  • be within a normal weight range for dogs and cats.
  • have two descended testicles (male dogs and cats only).

Your pet MUST NOT:

  • be coughing or sneezing
  • have any medical conditions or history of complications and medical conditions
  • be pregnant or in heat (female dogs only) due to increased risk of blood loss
  • have nursed for two weeks prior to surgery (cats only).

Pregnant cats can be spayed, but the pregnancy will be terminated at the time of surgery.

If your pet does not meet the above guidelines on the day of surgery, you’ll be called to pick up your animal without a refund of the pre-paid fee.

Before you apply
