Keep Your Pets Safe This Long Weekend!

Happy Canada Day from the HBSPCA!

As we excitedly get ready for the Canada Day weekend, we want to take a moment to remind you about a few safety tips to keep your furry friends happy & healthy!

    1. Temperatures will be incredibly hot, feeling like over 40 degrees for much of the weekend! There are no good reasons to leave a pet unattended in a vehicle. In the summer heat, temperatures inside a vehicle can reach a deadly point in a matter of minutes. If your car will be unattended for any period of time, home is the safest place for your pet. If you come across an animal in a hot car, please call (905) 574-7722 ext 401 or 911 – it could save a life!
    2. In light of the hot weather, ensure your pet has plenty of fresh water to drink! Pets can get dehydrated very quickly. If spending time outdoors, make sure they have a shady, cool spot to relax. In extreme heat, it’s best to keep your pet indoors.
    3. Fireworks can cause a lot of stress for our pets. If you plan to go to a firework show, be sure to keep your pet safely indoors. If your pet is really sensitive to noise, try leaving the television or radio on to help keep them calm. Sadly, many pets who are outside during firework displays can get spooked by the noise and commotion, and get lost.
    4. Microchipping your pet can help ensure that you are reunited in the event that he or she gets lost. Don’t have a microchip? Good news! We run several rabies and microchip clinics throughout the year for just $25 – you can learn more here. While you’re here, you can also consider getting a tag engraved in our brand new tag machine for just $10+tax!

On behalf of everyone here at the HBSPCA (human, furry & feathered!) – we’d like to wish you & your pets a very Happy Canada Day!
