Hello Friend of the Animals
Last week I shared how, like you, we are trying to be nimble and adapt in these uncertain times. And I assured you that our commitment to pet companions at risk has not changed. Today, one week into our 134th year of service to community, I want to tell you a little more about what we are doing.
Telemedicine means no pet is left behind.
Pets who have had a surgery at the shelter’s Companion Animal Hospital occasionally need to be seen again after surgery to monitor the healing of their stitches. With all Ontario Veterinarians being directed to postpone non-urgent visits, we’re doing our part as a shelter to balance social distancing with timely follow-up care. One way we’re able to provide follow-up support for our patients is with telemedicine. As we closed service for owned pets, we received a call from RC, a client, about her cat who had been recently spayed at our clinic. Kitty was still very playful and eating well, but she was showing signs of an infection around her stitches. Our Veterinarian and RVT spoke with our client, made a plan for care, and sent a prescription to the client’s community pharmacy for medicine which was delivered right to Kitty’s home

Your local shelter is guided by the Five Freedoms for all living things including freedom from pain, injury and disease. Your shelter continues to provide essential end of life care for loved pets. And while our process to receive animals has changed to keep staff and family members safe in these times of COVID-19, it has been met with appreciation. Last week we received a message from a loving pet parent.

I just wanted to express my gratitude for your help today for Freddie. You took care of him immediately and my sister, who dropped him off, said the lady who picked him up was extremely gentle, and sweet.
