Volunteer Highlight: Juniper & Alex
One dog-lover + one cat-lover = a dynamic volunteer duo.
Juniper and her daughter, Alex have been volunteering with us since 2009. Their love for animals extends from our shelter all the way to their own home, where they have their rescue dog, Louisiana Lucy and Alex’s cat, Groot.
What started as an opportunity for Alex to learn the importance of giving back to the community and develop a strong work ethic has turned into nearly 15 years of supporting animals in our community.
They’ve done a lot over the years; from cat socialization and enrichment to helping out at our earliest wellness clinics, Juniper and Alex are some of our most dedicated volunteers. You might even spot them around town in our new vans delivering pet food to homes in need.
Juniper’s favourite event to volunteer for is Picture Your Pet with Santa because who doesn’t love seeing pets and their people dressed in fun holiday outfits?
She and Alex really enjoy working alongside our HBSPCA staff. “They’re professional but supportive, and they’re very appreciative of the help which means a lot to us volunteers.”
Juniper feels very fulfilled by their volunteer work, saying it’s a key piece in the puzzle of living a balanced life. Volunteering allows her to give back to the community and connect with her daughter on a new level. “It’s a mission that we both feel strongly about. The people in need who benefit from the pet pantry donations seem very grateful,” she says.
