Pet Visiting

Spreading Joy, One Furry Visit at a Time
At the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, we believe that pets have an innate ability to bring out the best in all of us. We are thrilled to announce the relaunch of our beloved Pet Visiting Program!

What is Pet Visiting?
Our Pet Visiting Program aims to uplift spirits and brighten days for our community with the help of our dedicated volunteers and their resident pets, or Pet Ambassadors, as we like to call them. The Ambassadors will visit nursing homes, universities, colleges, hospitals, hospices, shelters, community centers and more, bringing with them a wave of positivity, affection and unconditional love.
The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA Pet Visiting Program interactions are defined as Animal Assisted Activity (AAA). Animal Assisted Activities (AAAs) are planned and goal-oriented informal interactions and visits with human-animal teams, like our Pet Visiting Ambassadors, for motivational, educational and recreational purposes. Human-animal teams involved in AAA have received at least introductory training, preparation and assessment to participate in these informal visits.
Pet Visiting Locations
How it works
Scheduling a Visit
Do you know an organization or group located in the Hamilton/Burlington area that would enjoy a visit from our Pet Visiting Ambassadors? Please complete our 'Pet Visiting Request Form' and we will contact you with the next steps.
Our Pet Ambassadors can visit your organization monthly, for a one-time visit, or for an upcoming special event. Given the program's popularity and the sheer number of requests we receive, it is essential to request your visit early. While we strive to accommodate all preferred schedules, sometimes your first choice might not be available. Your understanding and flexibility are appreciated.

Perfect Pairs
We are always looking for new Pet Visiting Volunteers and Ambassadors; could you and your pet be the perfect pair we are looking for? As a Pet Visiting volunteer, you will be a part of the HBSPCA family with many rewarding opportunities to visit a variety of facilities with a flexible schedule.
We invite you to start the onboarding process by completing our 'Pet Visiting Self-Screen Quiz' to see if your pet could be a good fit for the program. While dogs are our most common Pet Ambassadors, we welcome any friendly and social pet to apply to the Pet Visiting Program!
Our Pet Visiting Ambassador animals make a huge impact in the lives of those they visit and we at the HBSPCA thank you for considering us as you look to share your valuable time.

Supporting the Pet Visiting Program
At the HBSPCA, we are dedicated providing experiences that promote the well-being of both animals and people. While we are delighted to offer our Pet Visiting Program free of charge, we graciously welcome donations and contributions to support our efforts.
Your generosity helps fund this heart-warming program but also ensures we can continue to share the healing presence of pets with everyone, making these invaluable experiences accessible to even more groups within our community.
Meet Team Happiness

Theodore

Hi there! My name is Theodore—but you can call me Tee-Ooo, Teodora, or Teo-Teo if you like. I’m two and a half years old, and I’ve been with my family for just over two years now. I’m not your average cat—I love going outside, riding the bus, and watching TV.
I’m a lovable, caring goofball who loves meeting new people. Belly rubs are my favourite, and I go crazy for tube-y treats like Churru. I also enjoy walks and exploring the outdoors, especially when I get to meet someone new.
I live with Rose, Carter, Enid, and Cheddar, and I enjoy spending time with them. When I see someone who’s scared, nervous, or crying, I’ll head straight over to comfort them—it’s just who I am. I’m calm and gentle, and I love making people feel better.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in January 2025, and I’ve been winning hearts ever since. Whether I’m sitting quietly or getting pets, I always try to make new friends. When I’m relaxing, I love watching comedy shows, cartoons, veterinary programs, and horse racing.
I can’t wait to meet you!

Tess Gracie

Hi there! My name is Tess Gracie—but you can call me Tess, or even Ms. Gracie if you’re feeling fancy. I’m three years old, and I’ve been with my family since I was just a tiny 10-week-old pup.
I’m full of energy and love, and there’s nothing I enjoy more than belly rubs, back scratches, and running around the park playing ball—especially if other dogs are chasing me! I’ve got a big personality and a happy heart, and my family calls me the Treat Monster because I’ll do just about anything for a protein snack.
I’m known for my fancy moves—I can walk on two legs (even backwards!) and do tricks like spin, high five, and sit pretty. When I see someone I love, I’ll run right over and sit by their feet, hoping for some rubs. I have a doggy brother named Eddie who lives with my extended family, and when we get together each week, it’s a full-on celebration.
Sometimes when I get really excited, I let out a happy little howl—it always makes people smile. I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2024, and I’ve been loving it ever since. I’m joyful, sweet, and always ready to make a new friend.
I can’t wait to meet you!

Olive

Hi there! My name is Olive—but you can call me Ollie, or Brown Dog if you're a close friend. I’m turning 10 years old on October 23, 2025, and I’ve been with my family since I was 8 weeks old. I was adopted from the Hamilton SPCA just two days before Christmas, and I’ve been the best gift ever since.
I’m calm, friendly, and smart, and I love spending time outside. I enjoy walks in the neighbourhood, exploring the trails at the RBG, and visiting my litter sister who lives nearby. I often stop by my neighbours’ house for treats and back scratches, and when things are quiet at home, I squeak my tennis ball to keep myself entertained.
I’ll never turn down sweet potato, beef liver, cheese, peppers, or cooked broccoli. I know all the classic tricks—sit, stay, lay down, dance, and leave it—and I won’t step outside unless I get the OK. I have a few quirks too: I shake off the moment it starts to rain, and I howl when I hear sirens.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2024, and I love greeting people with a gentle wag and a sneaky kiss. I remember everyone I meet and get more excited each time. People always say, “She’s so calm,” and they never miss my extra-long tail!
I can’t wait to meet you!

Phyllis

Hi there! My name is Phyllis—but you can call me Phyl or even Phylly Cheesesteak if you’re feeling fun. I just turned two, and I joined my family in November 2023 when they adopted me from the HBSPCA.
I’m a playful, curious girl who’s always up to something! I love going for walks, getting muddy, chomping on sticks, and showing off my moves at agility class. I’ve got a soft spot for veggies—bell peppers and cucumbers are my absolute favourites—and don’t even get me started on dental chews.
I’m sweet, social, and full of love, and I’ll give you a tail-wagging welcome if we meet. I’m learning cool tricks like high fives and agility jumps, and I never say no to a good back rub. People say I have a big personality and a mischievous streak, but it’s all part of my charm.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in May 2025, and I’ve been soaking up the attention ever since. I’m one of a kind, and I can’t wait to make you smile!

Misty

Hi there! My name is Misty—but my humans call me Honey. I’ve heard it so often that I’m pretty sure it’s my real name now!
I’m nine years old, and my family says they’ve been incredibly lucky to have me in their lives for the past eight years. I’m gentle, calm, and affectionate, but I’ve still got an adventurous side—especially when I’m running through the woods with my red lab brother. I’m older, so naturally, I’m the boss... and he knows it.
I’m not a big eater, but offer me some peanut butter or veggie sticks and I’m all yours. I’m also very routine—I like meals and walks at the same time every day, and I always wait at the window when it’s close to the time my dad gets home. Oh, and don’t even think about feeding me unless the water bowl is right beside the food.
When the grandkids visit, I consider them part of my pack. I show affection in quiet little ways—like gently rubbing against people or sitting close and leaning in. It always makes them smile.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in February 2025, and I’ve loved it from the start. I’m peaceful, loving, and known as the quietest dog my family’s ever had—not even my footsteps make a sound.
I’d love to meet you—and when I do, I’ll be right by your side.

Farley

Hi, I’m Farley!
I’ve been with my family for four years now, and life’s been pretty great—especially when there’s snow. I love playing in it, and I’m known for some seriously impressive zoomies when the mood strikes. I'm a happy, gentle soul who thinks everyone is a friend (and I usually greet them like we’ve known each other forever—with a full tail wag, of course).
My favorite treats? Blueberries and my special peanut butter cookies—yum. I’ve also got a cool uncle named Ash, who comes to visit and play all the time. He got his start at the HBSPCA, and now he’s part of my pack.
Every morning, I like to wake up Mom in my own special way—by gently resting my neck across hers. It’s my polite (but effective) way of saying, “Walk time, let’s go!”
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in May 2025, and I’ve loved every moment of it. Being around people makes me happy, and I think they can tell.
My family says I’m something special—and between you and me, I think they’re right.
Hope I get to meet you soon!

Juno

Hi! I’m Juno Tickle Princess—yep, that’s my real name! Around here, I go by Juno J, Ju, Sad Face, or Pretty Girl—depends on the moment.
I’ve been with my family since I was 8 weeks old, and now I’m almost five. I’m brilliant, joyful, and absolutely love people. On walks, I like to nibble bits of sticks, play fetch (but I don’t give the ball back, sorry!), and make new human best friends wherever I go.
When it comes to food, I’m all in—every meal is a celebration. But pig’s ears? Next-level happiness. I live with my cat sibling Google, my brother Zack, and my sister Rose, so there’s always something going on.
I’ve got a few special skills: I can keep a ball exactly two inches from your hand without ever letting you grab it. I can also back up around furniture and corners without even looking—total pro. And every night, I grab my “baby” (my favorite dog stuffy from puppyhood) and settle in for bed. Oh—and I barely bark. Ever.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in January 2025, and I welcome every new friend with a belly roll and tail wag. I’ve even been known to sit on people’s feet to keep them from leaving—belly rubs must continue!
I love everyone I meet, and I can’t wait to meet you too.

Lylah

Hey there! I’m Lylah—sometimes Bear, if you really know me.
I’ve been with my family since I was just 8 weeks old, and now I’m five and a half! I’ve got three human brothers and a couple of fish tanks at home, so there’s always something going on. My favorite thing in the world? Hanging out with Dad—and chasing squirrels on walks (I will find them).
I’m all about that healthy lifestyle, but I’ve got a soft spot for liver snaps. And cheese? Don’t even get me started. I’ve got tons of energy and love meeting new people—especially the ones who smell like other dogs.
Shoes are my thing... but not like that! I just love sleeping with them. Never chew, never steal—just a cozy nap buddy. I know a pretty cool trick routine too, all with hand signals. No words needed!
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in May 2025 and I’m usually just hanging out, being sweet and friendly with everyone I meet.
Oh, and I do love my people—but honestly? If you’re a dog person, we’re going to get along just fine.
Can’t wait to say hi!

Snickers

Hey there! I’m Snickers—Snicky if we’re friends (and we will be). I joined my family four years ago and live with three cats, so I’ve learned to be pretty chill... at least until it’s time to play! I love fetch—especially with two frisbees—and a good game of tug with my thick rope. Snow piles? The best. I could jump and dig in them all day.I’m a true opportunist when it comes to food. I’ll eat just about anything, which makes training a breeze! I do have a bunch of allergies—beef, turkey, grass, dust, and more—but my special frozen treats with Greek yogurt, peas, and spinach? Delicious.
People say I’m goofy, sweet, and full of love. I know how to give high fives, shake paws, and roll over (but only on grass!). I share the house with my feline siblings—Whiskey, Winnie von Kitty, and Lukey the Destroyer. Let’s just say... they’re the bosses. I joined the Pet Visiting Program in February 2025, and I love making people smile. If you need a little extra love, I’ll lean in close or rest my head on your leg and give you the look. Works like magic. Can’t wait to meet you soon!

Cricket

Hi there! I’m Cricket.I’m 12 years old and have been living my best life with my family for the past three years. I may be a little older, but I’ve got the heart of a pup—especially when there are belly rubs or treats involved!
One of my favorite things to do is flop right onto my back, whether I’m wide awake or fast asleep. It’s kind of my signature move. I’m a pretty relaxed and sociable gal who loves being near my people—especially when it’s time for my favorite nighttime treat: half a DentaStick. (Yes, I know exactly when it’s coming.) I share my days with two tiny humans—my grandbabies, Zeke and Archie. When they’re around, you’ll usually find me laying quietly beside them, just soaking up the love. I’m gentle, calm, and always happy to be part of the moment.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2024, and it’s been such a joy. People say I have a soothing presence—and I think they’re right. I don’t need to do much to make someone’s day better.Just being me seems to be enough. And honestly, that feels pretty special.

Charlie

Hey there! I’m Charlie. I’m three years old and have been living the good life with my family since I was just four months old. I’m a pretty chill guy—quiet, gentle, and always ready for a cuddle. People often say I have the calmest energy, especially around kids. I like to think of myself as a professional snuggler who’s happiest when sharing quiet moments with the people I love.
My favorite part of the day is heading to the park in the morning to chase my ball and hang out with my dog friends. I get three walks every day—yep, three!—and wouldn’t trade them for anything. Being outside, seeing familiar faces, and enjoying life one paw at a time is pretty much my idea of heaven. When it comes to treats, I’m easy—if it’s a treat, I’m happy. No favorites here, just food, please!
I don’t have any furry siblings, but my human’s grandkids keep things lively. I love being their gentle buddy and giving kisses when they need a little extra love. I joined the Pet Visiting Program in November 2024, and I’ve loved every minute.

Huxley

Hi there! I’m Huxley—also known as Mr. Sticks, Hux, or Mr. Sir. I’m six years old and have been part of my family for five and a half wonderful years.
I’m a lovable homebody with a goofy streak and a big heart. My favorite activity? Fetch—but not the normal kind. I prefer a high-energy version that involves four balls, nonstop running, and keeping my human on their toes. It’s part sport, part chaos, and 100% my idea of fun. When I’m not playing, I’m all about couch naps, proudly delivering the mail, and carrying home any stray socks or tennis balls I find along the way. I’ve got a soft spot for bully sticks, and if my dinner doesn’t come topped with lettuce, I’ll wait politely until it does. I also love car rides, especially when they end at PetSmart—I could spend hours watching the fish, birds, and lizards.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2024, and I truly enjoy making people smile—whether it’s through a quiet cuddle, a goofy look, or just being a calm, friendly presence.

Josie

Hey there! I’m Josie—short for Josephine! I’m almost seven years old and have been with my family since I was just eight weeks old. Being an only child means I get all the attention, and trust me—I’m a pro at soaking it up!
I’m a happy, kind, and slightly dramatic diva with a stubborn streak. When I don’t feel like doing something, I just pretend I’m asleep—works more often than you’d think! I love meeting new people, lounging in the sun, and joining my humans on patios during summer, where I patiently wait for pats and compliments. I’m not picky when it comes to snacks—bananas, peanut butter, cucumbers, cheese… if it’s food, count me in. One of my favorite things is sitting on people’s feet, leaning in close for pets, and howling to say hi. Basically, I’m part dog, part conversation starter.
I joined the HBSPCA Pet Visiting Program in June 2024 and have been sharing my big smile and even bigger personality ever since. Can’t wait to meet you—just be ready to pet me!

Skylar

Hi, I’m Skylar—but you can call me Sky! I’m 6 years old and have been with my human since I was a puppy. From the very start, I’ve loved meeting people (whether they want to meet me or not!), running full speed after my ball, and proudly carrying my “baby” toy to the door when my human comes home.
I don’t have any siblings, but I treat everyone like family. Whether it’s sitting nicely to offer my paw or snuggling in close for a backside rub, I’ll do whatever it takes to bring a smile. I’m also very punctual—every night at exactly 7:30 PM, I expect my big treat. Don’t be late! My favorite food? Green tripe. It’s stinky but delicious. While I’m sweet and gentle, I’ve been known to convert even the most reluctant into full-blown dog people. It’s just what I do.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2024, and I love spreading happiness wherever I go. My human says I’m loving, wicked smart, and perfect—and honestly, I think that sums me up pretty well. Thanks for letting me share a little bit of my happy world with you. Hope to meet you soon!

Joey

Hi! I’m Joey—also known as Joe, Joe Joe, or Baba if you really want to win me over. I’m 4 years old and have been part of my family since I was just 8 weeks old. From day one, I’ve been all about love, loyalty, and just the right amount of mischief.
I’m sweet, gentle, and playful, with a big heart and an even bigger love for snuggles. When I’m not chewing on a cheek roll, chasing frisbees, or expertly dismantling Kong tennis balls, you’ll find me cozied up with my head between my human’s legs, soaking up all the affection I can get. I’m a total car ride enthusiast and proud yard guardian—rain, snow, or shine, I’m on duty. I share my home with my best friend and tiny sister, an 8-pound Havanese who holds a huge place in my heart. We’re inseparable.
My favorite foods? Smack pork tops the list, with lamb lung as my favorite treat. I have impeccable manners too—no meal or treat gets touched without the magic word: “break.” I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2025 and can’t wait to share my love (and maybe a few snuggles) with you!

Jersey

Hi! I’m Jersey, but my family calls me Chunky Monkey (affectionately, of course!). I’m 2 years old and have been with my family since I was just four months old. From day one, I knew cuddles and calm vibes were my thing. I’m not much for zoomies or chaos—I’d rather lie around and soak up all the love and attention.
As a proud foodie, I don’t play favorites when it comes to treats. If it’s edible, I’m interested! I’m super relaxed and chilled, and my human says I’m the calmest pup around. I live in a full house with two other dogs—one older, one younger—and a human brother, and I love every minute of it. One of my signature moves is the “pat me now” nudge—I’ll rub up against your legs until you get the hint. Trust me, it works every time.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2024 and absolutely love the extra attention—it’s kind of my specialty. Fun fact: I’m a total water dog and love paddle boarding, floating around like the queen I am. Can’t wait to meet you—and maybe score a treat or two while I’m at it!

Nugget

Hi, I’m Nugget—my full name is Nugget Charles Darwin III Ireland. (But you can call me Nuggy, Chimkin, Little Pickerel, or Pooshious.) I’m turning 11 this October and have been living the pampered life since I was a puppy. My days are all about the finer things: multiple pillows, sleeping under a duvet (with one leg elegantly sticking out for temperature control), and the gourmet alerts of a banana peel or peanut butter jar opening—my ears are that good.
Though I’m small, I’ve got a royal attitude. I’m a sassy, independent little prince who shares his kingdom with my younger doggy brother, Phil—a whirlwind who’s been testing my patience for three years. We’re working on it… slowly. I have a charming quirk—a single front tooth that gives me the goofiest smile, especially when my lip gets stuck. People can’t get enough of it. And before I jump on anything, I gently rest my chin first, like a true gentleman checking the terrain.
I joined the Pet Visiting Program in June 2025, and I’ve loved bringing my signature sass, sweetness, and smile to new people ever since. Small but mighty, I make a big impression—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Benefits of the HBSPCA Pet Visiting Program
Animal assisted activities (AAA) have proven benefits of both physical and mental health in a variety of ways. Various studies have shown AAA to reduce; blood pressure, heart rate and overall anxiety. As well as improved healing times, social skills and even the overall mood of a participant. Many of our partner locations have shared very positive stories and feedback from visits, expressing the benefits of AAA being shown in their participants.

Facility Testimonials
The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is offering our day program pet therapy to our participants.  The program is benefiting our special needs adult’s participants by providing them emotional support, improving social skills, and enhancing overall well-being. Engaging with animals is leading to increased feelings of comfort and companionship, promoting a positive bond that fosters mental health and boosts self-esteem.

The Pet Visiting Program has been such a hit with our students. The animals have all been so sweet and well behaved, we've even converted a few students who were originally nervous around or hadn't had much interaction with dogs. We have students (and staff members) who regularly monitor the schedule to line up their visit with their favourite animals. Many of the students are away from home for the first time and missing their own pets, so a few minutes to decompress and get some cuddles makes a huge difference to them.
We are very grateful for the HBSPCA Pet Visiting Program and are so thankful for the joy it brings to the HBIA! The dogs and their owners bring a sense of calm and happiness to our members, offering both emotional support and comfort. We look forward to our monthly visits and the special connection they bring.
