Volunteer Highlight: Karen Pettigrew

Meet Karen Pettigrew, a compassionate retired nurse who found her calling at the HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital. After 30 years in the operating room, Karen now volunteers her expertise to assist with surgeries and provides tender care to our pet patients.

Hailing from Hamilton, Karen has been a dedicated volunteer at the hospital for seven years, bringing her passion for animals and a wealth of nursing experience to the table. Her love for furry friends is evident in the seven or eight dogs she and her family have cared for over the years, often having multiple four-legged companions by her side.

In the spay and neuter clinics, Karen's eyes light up as she helps the vet technicians prepare for surgery. She expertly monitors the animals' vital signs, ensuring a safe and smooth recovery process. And as they wake up, she seizes the opportunity to share some cuddles, knowing that even the smallest gestures can make a difference. Karen says her role in the animal hospital is an ideal fit – she gets her ‘surgery fix’ and she has always wanted to work with animals.

Beyond the HBSPCA, Karen's heart extends to other animals in need. She generously volunteers at TEAD (The Equestrian Association for the Disabled), offering her support in the barn and assisting with lessons. Additionally, she dedicates her time to DIBS (Dogs in Better Spots), where she conducts phone interviews to screen potential dog adopters.

Karen's dedication is an inspiration to everyone she meets, and the animals she cares for are grateful recipients of her kindness. At the Companion Animal Hospital, Karen's presence brightens the lives of countless animals, providing them with the love and care they deserve.

The HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital provides spay/neuter surgery for healthy cats on an appointment basis. Costs are spay (female) $219; neuter (male) $179 and include complimentary Rabies vaccine, FVRCP vaccine, Microchip, dose of flea prevention and E-Collar (Cone) for female cats.
