We're tackling animal overpopulation in Hamilton and Burlington. Spaying or neutering your pet is the most critical and impactful component to managing a responsible pet population. It also decreases the risk of many cancerous diseases, and improves balanced and calm behaviours, optimizing the health and happiness of your pets.

Our Service Programs

We have two unique programs dedicated to serving the diverse members and partners in our network. Our Pet Health Community Outreach Program is designed specifically for low-income-verified pet owners, to ensure that cost never becomes an impediment to accessing quality surgical care.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, partners and volunteers, our Subsidized Local Community Program supports population control and health across Hamilton and Burlington. Regardless of which program you choose, they each come at one comprehensive, integrated price.

Spay or Neuter Your Dog

Due to limited capacity, canine spay and neuter surgeries are available by income qualification only. Pet owners must first qualify and attend a Pet Health Outreach Clinic appointment to establish care and determine eligibility. Dogs must be 35 kg or less for surgery.

Spay & Neuter Aftercare

Your pet has undergone spay or neuter surgery at the HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure a safe, comfortable recovery.

Top 5
Aftercare Tips

  • Keep your pet indoors, calm, and resting
  • Use the e-collar (female only) at all times for 10–14 days
  • Check the incision site daily
  • No bathing, running, or jumping during recovery
  • Contact us if you notice swelling, redness, or discharge

What to
Expect

  • Your pet may be sleepy or quiet for the first 24 hours
  • Mild swelling at the surgical site can be normal
  • Stitches are internal and dissolve on their own (no removal needed)

Incision
Care

  • Check the incision once daily
  • Keep the area clean and dry
  • Do not allow licking or chewing
  • Do not apply ointments or medications unless directed

Pain Management

Your pet has been given long-lasting pain medication and should not require more.

⚠️ Never give human medications—these can be dangerous or fatal to pets.

When to Contact Us

Call us and email us a picture of the incision if your pet shows:

  • Redness, swelling, or discharge
  • Bleeding or opening of the incision
  • Loss of appetite, vomiting, or unusual behaviour

Once you register for your appointment above, you'll receive an email with all the details you need, including prepping your animal for the appointment. You will be provided with a specific drop-off time (generally between 8 am and 9 am) and pick-up time (generally between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm) prior to your appointment.
