Dog Training: Level One

Are you ready to build a stronger bond with your dog and master essential training skills?

Join us for the Level One K9 Principles Training course! This comprehensive 7-week program is designed to teach you the basics of dog training, including commands like sit, stay, and heel, while fostering a positive and rewarding relationship with your canine companion.

Eligibility

Vaccinations

  • We follow the recommended vaccination protocol from the Ontario Veterinary College.
  • All dogs entering a group class must be up to date with rabies, parvovirus, distemper, and Bordetella (kennel cough).
  • Puppies not old enough to receive certain vaccines are exempt.

Age

  • All dogs must be at least 12 weeks of age or older to join this program.

What to Expect

  • Weekly Training Sessions – Over 7 weeks, you and your dog will engage in hands-on training led by experienced trainers. Each session focuses on foundational skills that improve behavior and responsiveness.
  • Positive Reinforcement Techniques – We use reward-based training to encourage good behavior, making learning enjoyable for both you and your dog.
  • Basic Commands & Beyond – You’ll cover sit, stay, heel, and more to ensure your dog understands and follows commands consistently.
  • Interactive Learning Environment – Train in a real-world setting with other dogs, helping your pet stay focused around distractions.
  • Strengthen Your Bond – Beyond commands, this course enhances trust, communication, and daily interactions with your dog.

Course Curriculum

  • Focus & Attention – Teaching your dog that all fun happens with you, even around distractions.
  • Place – Your dog learns that their bed is the jackpot, making them more settled at home.
  • Relax – The “OFF” switch! When you sit, they lie down beside you.
  • Recall – The most important life-saving skill your dog will learn—always coming when called.
  • Sit – An automatic response when you stop walking.
  • Down – The foundation for fantastic stays.
  • Oops, I Dropped It – Teaching your dog that items on the floor are off-limits unless permitted.
  • Door Control – Prevents dogs from charging through doors, keeping them safe.
  • Leash Respect – Say goodbye to pulling! Your dog learns how to walk without tugging.
  • Stay – Holding a position until released.
  • Heeling – Walking beside you in busy areas with focus and control.
  • Visit Vet & Groomer – Exercises to help your dog stay calm during visits.
  • Socialization – Encouraging appropriate interactions with dogs and people.
  • Other Topics – Reactivity, resource guarding, counter surfing, proper greetings, chewing habits, and more.

  • Reserve Your Spot – Spaces are limited, so register early to secure your place. Registration covers all 7 sessions.
  • Prepare for Training – Bring your dog’s favorite treats, a leash, and a positive attitude. We provide all necessary training resources.

  • $300 (includes all training materials, one-on-one guidance, and personalized advice).

Additional Information

  • Location: Classes are held at our HBSPCA training facility (free parking available).
  • What to Wear: Dress comfortably; closed-toed shoes required.
