Three Legs and a Whole Lotta Love. Gigi has a Story to Tell!

Imagine – you’re a clumsy, flopsy, happy three-month-old puppy with a whole lot of energy and an abundance of love to give. Your days are filled with curiosity, playfulness, and the pure joy of discovering the world around you. However, your young life has already been marked by instability. You've had two families in your short existence, through no fault of your own. Each transition is confusing, but you remain hopeful, greeting each day with a wagging tail and a heart full of affection. On one of your many adventures with your first family, something goes wrong. You take a tumble, and your back leg starts hurting badly. Being just a puppy, you don’t know how to communicate this pain to your human caregivers, and perhaps they are too preoccupied to notice your subtle signs of distress. You soldier on, adapting as best as you can to the discomfort. Unbeknownst to you, your injury is healing improperly. The bones are coming back together in a misaligned fashion, setting the stage for a lifetime of pain and discomfort. This isn’t just any leg—it’s the leg of a dog destined to grow into a large, strong adult.

This is Gigi’s story.

Gigi’s journey took a significant turn in April when she came into our care. Our initial observations confirmed our worst fears: her limp was more than just a minor injury. X-rays revealed the extent of the damage. It was clear that Gigi was in pain, and immediate intervention was necessary to ensure her future well-being. She was put on a pre-surgical dose of pain management medication and placed in the kindest of foster homes to rest and prepare for her surgery.

For a big dog like Gigi, the most humane and practical solution to avoid a lifetime of arthritis and joint stress was to amputate the leg. This decision was not made lightly. Amputation would allow Gigi to live a pain-free, active life without the chronic issues that would inevitably arise from her improperly healed injury.

On April 23rd,  our sweet Gigi was prepped for surgery. It was a delicate and lengthy procedure, lasting nearly three hours and involving two veterinarians. The surgical team worked meticulously, and Gigi came through with flying colors. Once again, she returned to her loving foster home, this time with a revised pain management plan to help her through the healing process while still allowing her to be the happy puppy she was meant to be.

Now, over a month has passed, and Gigi is thriving in ways we could only have hoped for. Her resilience and spirit are truly remarkable. She’s quite the goofball, and her determination to master life on three legs is nothing short of inspiring. Linda, her foster mom, is dedicated not only to teaching Gigi how to navigate the house and yard but also to ensuring she receives regular puppy training. This includes housebreaking and teaching her the all-important lesson that not everything in sight is a chew toy.

Gigi’s personality shines through in everything she does. Her playful antics and affectionate nature endear her to everyone she meets. Three legs don’t slow her down; if anything, they seem to give her even more zest for life. Her zestiness will surely keep her forever family on their toes, providing them with endless joy and laughter.

Gigi’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the profound impact that compassionate care can have on their lives. Unfortunately, stories like Gigi’s are not rare in today’s world. The rising cost of living has led to an increase in owner surrenders. Many families find themselves unable to afford the care their pets need, resulting in overcrowded shelters and a growing number of animals in need of help.

At our organization, we are committed to stepping in and providing the necessary care and love that these animals deserve. However, we heavily rely on donations to continue our operations and expand our capacity to help more animals like Gigi.

The cost of Gigi’s care to date has exceeded $7,500. This includes her surgery, medication, follow-up care, and everyday expenses in her foster home. Every donation we receive goes directly to covering these costs and ensuring that we can continue to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need.

It will help us continue to take in animals who, like Gigi, have nowhere else to turn. With your support, we can provide them with the medical care, love, and support they need to thrive and find their forever homes.
